The quality of smartphone cameras these days has reached a point where it doesn't make sense for most people to invest in a standalone digital camera. Of course, if you want better manual control and zoom, then getting a DSLR or even a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera makes sense, as these give you the flexibility of adding different lenses. Most good mirrorless cameras still have a high entry barrier, which is why entry-level DSLRs are still an attractive option for many.
This year Canon has once again refreshed its entry-level lineup with not one, but two new models. Let’s see how much of an improvement it really offers.
Canon EOS 1500D design
It’s roughly the same size and weight as its predecessor and as far as button placement goes, it’s exactly the same. One-handed shooting is easy and it still offers good grip thanks to ample rubber cladding on the right side of the camera.
You get plenty of buttons for accessing quick settings (‘Q’ button), shortcut buttons for drive mode, ISO, white balance and autofocus adjustments. These buttons are also used for navigating the menus.
The mode dial on the top has a solid feel and the grippy texture makes it easy to switch modes even with greasy fingers. The power switch also has a reassuring click to it. It’s light, easy to carry around and has just the right amount of buttons which makes it less daunting for novice users.
Besides easy media transfer, it also helps a user get the most out of the camera. This includes remote shutter, live viewfinder, instant social sharing of photos and a few more.
As far as video shooting capabilities go, it is pretty standard and videos can be shot in 1080p @25fps.
The lens produced images that were great for a beginners or amateur photographers. Thus, overall image quality is much better. During our test, we noticed acceptably sharp shots and great colours accuracy.
During our tests, we also noticed that colour saturation was decent and there was a slight pop in warmer hues. This is usually the case with entry-level DSLR cameras. One thing we have to compliment this camera on is that when we conducted our daylight tests, were got excellent shots, even though the sky dull during the monsoons. However, the dynamic range that was retained was good. The colour of the sky was well balanced in accordance with the foreground.
However, images are still very much usable. But, as you increase the ISO sensitivity, the overall image quality begins to decline — but is not as bad as seen in older cameras, — Thanks to the DIGIC 4+ processor at play. Check out a few sample shots taken with different incremental ISO settings.
Who’s it For?
It’s clear Canon is marketing its latest EOS cameras purely on price, prompted by 19% growth in this sector during 2017. By pricing the 1500D at roughly half the cost of the EOS M5/M50 cameras, it is aiming to attract cash-strapped buyers in a marketplace that has seen consumers keeping a tight hold on their cash.
However, compared with either mirrorless camera, the 1500D falls short. Physically, it’s bulkier and the monitor is non-adjustable. Its resolution is low for a modern camera and it lacks touch-screen capabilities, which many novice users appreciate.
The 9-point AF system means autofocusing can struggle in dim lighting and with low-contrast subjects. This is particularly obvious when shooting in live view mode. Face recognition capabilities are relatively poor and the camera’s video capabilities are limited. It can also be problematic shooting video with a monitor screen.
The EOS 3000D is even less attractive, having been stripped back to a ‘bare bones’ model. Price alone will be the incentive to consider this camera.
What’s New?
There’s nothing really new or exciting in the EOS 1500D. Canon appears to have assembled the camera from existing components and popped a new badge on it.
However, the camera has been included in a new Canon Camera Assist Program, which has been developed in Australia and provides video guides to the camera’s controls, ‘advanced’ tips and techniques and instructions on connecting the camera to a smartphone.
